Gender is woven throughout all the SDGs as it sits at the intersection of economic, social and environmental issues. It has its own Sustainable Development Goal, SDG 5—with the ambition of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls—and is mentioned explicitly in 10 of the other Goals.
The United Nations defines SDG 5 as the global mandate to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” by 2030. While this goal sets a clear vision, specific objectives reveal the scale of the challenge: thirty years after the landmark Beijing Declaration, true equality remains elusive. Progress is hindered by persistent legal barriers that restrict employment and fail to eradicate gender-based discrimination, gender-based violence, harmful practices including child marriage and female genitile mutilation (FGM). Furthermore, the unequal burden of unpaid domestic work continues to limit women's and girls’ opportunities, while representation in public life and growth in political leadership remain alarmingly slow. Combined with limited autonomy over reproductive health and significant gender gaps in land ownership and digital access, it is clear that substantial work is still required to meet the 2030 deadline and ensure equality in every aspect of women’s and girls’ life.
