CHILE
Chile has progressively strengthened its commitment to gender equality through legal reforms, public policies, and greater female participation in political and economic life. The country has also incorporated gender equality into its broader sustainable development agenda.
One of the most visible areas of progress has been women’s political participation. Measures promoting gender parity have contributed to a stronger presence of women in elected institutions, while reforms have also addressed issues such as gender-based violence, employment equality, and reproductive rights.
However, significant gaps remain between legal progress and women’s everyday experiences. Unequal care responsibilities, differences in employment and income, and gender-based violence continue to affect women. These challenges are particularly relevant for women facing economic or social disadvantages.
The distribution of unpaid care work remains an important source of inequality. Women continue to assume a larger share of household and caregiving responsibilities, which can affect their participation in paid employment and limit opportunities for career advancement.
Violence against women is another major concern. Domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence continue to require effective prevention, protection, and access to justice. The implementation of existing policies remains an important part of addressing these challenges.
Chile’s experience also raises questions about the relationship between political representation and broader equality. While women’s presence in political institutions has increased, economic inequalities and differences in leadership and employment opportunities remain. The country therefore offers delegates an opportunity to discuss how institutional reforms can translate into more substantive gender equality.
