BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTRY'S RELATIONSHIP WITH SDG 5

Canada is considered one of the leading countries in promoting SDG 5, with strong legal protections for women’s rights and active support for gender equality policies both nationally and internationally. The country promotes feminist foreign policy initiatives and works closely with the United Nations on women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, and protection against gender-based violence.

CURRENT CHALLENGES AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Despite its progress, Canada still faces important challenges, including the gender pay gap, underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, violence against women, and inequalities affecting Indigenous women and girls. The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women remains a major national and international concern.

Canada is highly relevant in an SDG 5 debate because it often represents progressive approaches to gender equality while also confronting unresolved social inequalities within its own society.
