SWEDEN
SWEDEN
By international metrics, absolute extreme poverty ($2.15 a day) is non-existent in Sweden due to its iconic Nordic Model—a universal welfare framework combining strong labor protections, state-funded healthcare, and a comprehensive social safety net. Globally, Sweden is an elite, hyper-progressive donor. It was the first country in history to meet the UN target of spending 0.7% of its Gross National Income (GNI) on Official Development Assistance (ODA) back in 1975, and it has consistently stayed above that threshold ever since. (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2026)
However, Sweden is currently experiencing a historic internal political transformation. In late 2023, Sweden officially abandoned its long-standing, self-imposed target of spending a rigid 1% of its GNI on foreign aid. Under its reformed development agenda ("Development Assistance for a New Era"), Sweden is actively tightening its focus—shifting significant resources toward European stability (like rebuilding Ukraine) and tying aid more closely to Swedish interests, trade partnerships, and migration management. (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2026)
Domestically, Sweden advances SDG 1 (No Poverty) through its comprehensive social‑protection system and strong public services, which help maintain a high standard of living and prevent poverty. Internationally, the country supports poverty‑eradication and economic‑empowerment initiatives, including substantial funding to UNDP to promote inclusive, green, and digital transitions in more than 100 countries.
