INDONESIA
Indonesia is an island nation that has made great strides in poverty reduction but faces severe urban-rural disparities across its thousands of islands. It is a major voice for the Global South. The country has been advocating for maritime economic development (Blue Economy) and sustainable agriculture (like palm oil) as essential paths to keeping rural populations out of poverty. (Can and Dartanto, 2023)
Indonesia’s engagement with SDG 1 – No Poverty is crucial because, despite significant progress, millions of people remain vulnerable due to climate shocks, regional inequalities, and limited access to essential services. While challenges persist, the country is assessed as on track or maintaining achievement. To advance further, Indonesia is implementing comprehensive national strategies that combine social protection, financial inclusion, and infrastructure development, all aimed at reducing poverty and strengthening long‑term resilience.
The UN supports Indonesia through initiatives that expand social protection, strengthen disaster‑risk reduction, and promote inclusive economic development, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Key challenges include persistent urban-rural inequality, climate‑related vulnerability, and gaps in social safety nets. Current efforts focus on blended finance mechanisms such as SDG Indonesia One to advance infrastructure development, improving financial inclusion to enhance livelihoods, and scaling up social assistance programmes to reinforce economic resilience.
