Brief description of its relationship with SDG-1

Ghana remains strongly committed to Sustainable Development Goal 1, aiming to eradicate poverty by 2030 and reduce poverty and inequality by 50% by 2027. Although it was once a leader in Sub-Saharan Africa halving extreme poverty ahead of the 2015 target, recent economic challenges have slowed progress, with performance now stagnating or improving at less than half the required pace to meet the 2030 goal. 

CURRENT CHALLENGES AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Ghana faces significant challenges in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1 by 2030, driven by an estimated $43 billion annual financing gap, high rural poverty, and marked regional disparities. Additional obstacles include inflation affecting food affordability, vulnerability to climate change, limited access to credit for smallholder farmers, and the lasting economic impact of COVID-19. At the same time, Ghana is actively pursuing SDG 1, aiming to cut poverty and inequality by 50% by 2027. Key initiatives include the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty or the National Health Insurance Scheme. These efforts focus on strengthening social protection, improving rural livelihoods, and building greater economic resilience.
