Brief description of its relationship with SDG-1

Egypt faces persistent socio‑economic pressures, including high inflation, food‑security vulnerabilities linked to heavy grain‑import dependence, and a large population living close to the poverty line. In line with UN‑reported priorities, the country is strongly committed to SDG 1 (No Poverty) through Egypt Vision 2030, which integrates poverty eradication, expanded social protection, and improved access to essential services. UN agencies highlight Egypt’s progress in reducing extreme poverty, strengthening social assistance coverage, and aligning national policies with the 2030 Agenda to better support vulnerable groups. 

CURRENT CHALLENGES AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Despite some progress, including a measurable decline in extreme poverty, significant challenges continue to persist, driven by the combined effects of inflation, marked regional disparities, and the structural vulnerability of informal workers who remain insufficiently protected by existing systems. Although the country has experienced periods of economic growth, this improvement has not translated into a sufficiently broad or inclusive reduction of poverty: more than 30% of the population still lives below the national poverty line, a figure that underscores how current advances, while meaningful, remain far from adequate to fully achieve the goal.

Taken together, these dynamics reveal a landscape in which progress exists but is uneven, fragile, and constantly exposed to socio‑economic pressures that limit the transformative potential of national development efforts. The persistence of such vulnerabilities highlights the need for deeper, more sustained interventions to ensure that growth becomes genuinely equitable and capable of lifting all segments of society.
