CHILE
Chile faces ongoing challenges, with progress on SDG 1 improving only moderately and still insufficient to meet the 2030 target. The country has nonetheless made substantial gains in reducing poverty: by 2022, extreme poverty had been virtually eradicated, with only 0.03% of the population living on less than $1.90 a day and 0.18% on less than $3.20. Overall poverty also declined significantly, reaching 5.70% in 2022.
Despite major progress in reducing absolute poverty, Chile continues to face challenges linked to relative poverty, high inequality, and persistent regional disparities. Addressing these issues requires targeted social programmes and updated national development strategies. Relative poverty remains a significant concern: in 2017 it stood at 16.5%, defined as living on less than half the national median income — a level well above the OECD average. To respond to these gaps, Chile is advancing initiatives such as expanding social protection, improving access to public services, and promoting digital inclusion in rural areas, supported in part by the Joint SDG Fund, which helps extend rural broadband and provide training opportunities.
