BANGLADESH
Bangladesh has made remarkable progress before in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 1, reducing the national poverty rate to around 20.5% by 2019. Despite being considered a global success story in poverty reduction, progress is now only moderate and insufficient to meet the 2030 target, with ongoing challenges such as income inequality, climate vulnerability, and the need to strengthen social safety nets.
Bangladesh continues to face significant challenges in achieving SDG 1, driven by widening urban–rural disparities, high youth unemployment, and exposure to climate-related disasters. Although poverty has declined significantly since the 1990s, sustaining this progress remains difficult due to economic shocks, inflation, and limited data for effectively targeting vulnerable groups. To address these issues, the country has expanded social protection systems, strengthened microfinance access, promoted female empowerment, and integrated SDG targets into its national development strategies.
