Dear Delegates,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Model United Nations Ticino Conference.

Over the two days of the Conference, you will have the opportunity to step into the role of a delegate representing a United Nations Member State, engage in diplomatic discussions, and work together with other delegates to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our world today.

This year's Conference is the beginning of a new cycle on the inplementation of Resolution A/RES/70/1 Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (25 September 2015). The focus, this year, will be on the following SDGs:

• SDG 1 – End poverty in all its forms everywhere

• SDG 5 – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

• SDG 7 – Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

• SDG 8 – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Rather than providing traditional study guides, we have created a dedicated Conference Page. In it you can find useful information about this year's SDGs and their relevant developments and current challenges. We have also included a detailed country portfolio. These resources are intended to support you in your preparatory work and help you better understand both the topics and the position of your assigned country.

During the Conference, delegates will meet in committees, where each country will have the opportunity to discuss the progress that has already been made and the challenges that still lie ahead. You will be expected to represent the interests and positions of your country faithfully, while also engaging in constructive dialogue, and negotiating with other delegations towards common solutions.

The SDGs are shared objectives, but countries face very different realities, priorities and challenges in their implementation. This is why diplomacy is meaningful, i.e. finding common ground while taking into account national interests and different perspectives.
